A knock box is a device used to collect used espresso grounds, or "pucks", after making espresso. It's also known as a "bash bin" or "coffee column". 

How it works 

After brewing, tap the portafilter against the knock box's padded surface.

The knock box's catch bin collects the spent pucks.

Benefits of using a knock box

Sanitary: A knock box is a more sanitary alternative to throwing used coffee grounds directly into the trash. 

Protects portafilter: Knocking the portafilter against a trash can can damage it.
